Italian Focus Group: February 20th, 2019, Vincenza (Italy)

February 22th, 2019.  Formedil Piamonte organised a focus group with six experts in Health and Safety, sector workers and members of the police, which gave a multidisciplinary view of three of the most common road works: lane closure, guardrail and traffic signs reparation and protocol in case of accident.

During the debate, the best prevention measures to be adopted by Road Maintenance and Operation professionals were discussed. They also stressed the future application of VRoad, which must take into account the real-world scenarios where these tasks are carried out, as well as the possibility that the virtual viewer will be adapt to the size of each apprentice, to ensure the immersive experience.

Spanish Focus group: February, 11th, 2019, Madrid (Spain)

February 2019, 12th. Fundación Laboral de la Construcción, the project leader, organised the first focus group with five experts in prevention and Conservation and Operation of Roads, in order to draw conclusions on the main risks and preventive measures to be implemented on road works.

Two hours of intense debate in which the need to modify the protocols of action in road works was affirmed. In terms of Health and Safety in the construction sector, the group affirmed the differences between the site professionals and road operators. The latter being multi-tasking professionals, so that the risk of their daily activities increases compared to the former, focused on a specific trade.

In relation to the hazard present in Conservation and Operation of Roads work, the advantage of using Virtual Reality tools to train these professionals was highlighted, as it improves realism and, therefore, facilitates the assimilation of knowledge: "Virtual Reality allows workers who have never set foot on a road to live the experience, and leave a cerebral register that will help them assimilate knowledge in prevention processes", as one of the experts explained. In addition to raise awareness of the need to improve training in occupational hazard prevention.
